Step 1 · National pre-selections
60 personalities, cultural professionals, artists and circusnext Platform members, gathered in 11 national committees to carry out step 1 of the selection process: the National Pre-selections.
National pre-selection committees for selection 2024:
Balkan region: Croatia/Serbia · Baltic region: Lithuania/Latvia · Belgium · Germany · Finland · France · Italy · The Netherlands · Portugal · Spain · Sweden/Denmark
These committees are organised by circusnext Platform members who are fully aware of the state of the art in their countries. They invite cultural professionals and artists from their territories to join their committees for this first step of the selection process. The committees examine the artists’ applications from their respective countries and select up to 5 projects (10 projects for the committee in France, due to the greater number of applications from that country) for the next step.
Step 2 · European Selection of Finalists
24 cultural venues and festivals from 15 European countries (the Platform members) take part in step 2 of the selection process: the European Selection of Finalists.
Step 3 · Selection of Laureates
8 artistic personalities sit on an artistic jury for step 3 of the selection process: the Selection of Laureates.
The Artistic Jury for the 2023 selection is made up of :
- Kitt Johnson (DK)
- Julia Christ (DE)
- Jean-Michel Guy (FR)
- Elena Lydia Kreusch (AT)
- Lucho Smit (NL/FR)
- Roman Müller (CH)
- Molly Saudek (US/FR)
- Johnny Torres (ES)
They bring an artistic perspective to the discussions, helping to move established boundaries in the circus field. They strive to find what is vibrant and vital in today’s circus and to encourage emerging and non-emerging authors to develop a broader creative approach and practice of circus.
Members of the Artistic Jury only votes in the final selection step but are involved at every step of the selection process:
– Step 1 – National pre-selections: Artistic Jury members take part in national pre-selection committees. Depending on how each committee is organised, they may or may not take part in the decision-making process.
– Step 2 – European selection of Finalists: All Artistic Jury members take part in the discussions and debates but do not take part in the decisions.
– Step 3 – Selection of Laureates: Based on stage presentations and individual interviews, the Artistic Jury members work towards a consensus to select 4 Laureate projects from the 12 Finalists.
